- Your out-of-network benefits and deductible
- Allowed amounts for CPT codes: 90791 (Intake), 90837 (60 minute therapy session), 90834 (45 minute therapy session)

Superbills and Receipts

Understanding the Cost of Therapy
There are several ways to pay for therapy and each has pros and cons:
- One option is to pay for therapy out of pocket. You will pay your therapist their hourly fee for each session. This gives you the freedom to choose the best therapist for you and is the simplest and most confidential way to pay for therapy. However, it is also the most expensive.
- Another option is to use your health insurance to pay for therapy. Most health insurance policies provide two types of coverage: in network and out of network.
- In network therapists bill your insurance for the service they provide on your behalf. You will usually need to pay a copay or coinsurance. Choice of therapist is limited and you may have trouble finding someone with availability, especially if you would like a specialist for a specific issue or treatment. Additionally, your insurance provider can access your confidential health records and can limit the amount of time you are allowed therapy. This option can be the least expensive way to pay for therapy and help make therapy affordable. However, the actual cost of in network therapy may be higher than you expect. You may be required to pay a certain amount before you can use your insurance benefits at all. This is called a deductible and can be several thousands of dollars.
- Out of network coverage is available through most insurance plans. Paying out of network providers is similar to paying for therapy out of pocket. You are required to pay your therapist’s full fee at the time of your appointment. After the appointment, your therapist will give you a receipt you can submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement. The reimbursement amount varies depending on your insurance plan. Out of network coverage gives you much more freedom and flexibility in choosing a therapist or specialist and a greater degree of confidentiality. With insurance reimbursement, out of network therapy can be affordable and compare to in network therapy.
Example
To illustrate, let’s take a look at the following summary of benefits and coverage.
This plan covers 80% of the out-of-network bill. Theoretically, a $150 session will cost $30. However, insurance companies usually have an allowable amount they are willing to pay. If the allowable amount is $125 you will receive 80% of $125 and pay the difference. Your final cost will be $50 after reimbursement.
Confidentiality
Superbill receipts include some basic session information like diagnostic codes. If you would prefer not to share this information with your insurance provider you may choose not to submit claims for reimbursement.
Summary
Out-of-network providers like Behavioral Health Direct do not bill insurance companies. Clients can submit receipts for reimbursement. This can allow access to higher quality care at an affordable cost. Please verify your out-of-network benefits before scheduling an appointment. If you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment please contact us. We look forward to hearing from you!
