What is Exposure Therapy?
Exposure therapy with response prevention (ERP), a behavioral technique from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), aims to help individuals confront and overcome fears and anxieties associated with anxiety and OCD. The goal is to reduce the impact anxiety has on people’s lives by challenging one’s assumptions and beliefs about experiencing anxiety and reversing conditioned behavior that maintains and feeds anxiety. Exposure therapy has been shown to be an effective treatment for many different types of anxiety disorders and OCD. Some of the benefits of exposure therapy include reduced fear and anxiety, improved quality of life, and increased ability to cope with anxiety-provoking situations.
- Break the anxiety and OCD cycle.
- Stop avoiding, obsessing, or engaging in compulsive behavior.
- Reduce the impact your thoughts and doubts have on your life.
- Overcome your fears.
- Start enjoying life again.

How Does Exposure Therapy Work?
Exposure therapy typically involves gradually exposing a person to the thing they’re afraid of. This could be done in imagination, or in real life.
There are several theories that explain how exposure therapy might work. One theory suggests that exposure therapy helps people to become desensitized to their fear, like a horror movie that becomes less and less frightening the more you watch it, and eventually able to confront their fears without feeling overwhelmed. Another theory suggests that exposure therapy helps people develop a new and more realistic view of their fear. People can learn that their fears are not as dangerous as they seem, and that they can cope with the anxiety they feel.
My personal belief is that exposure therapy works by helping people develop psychological flexibility. Psychological flexibility is the ability to be fully present with openness and willingness. It’s about being able to be with our thoughts and feelings without getting lost in them, and making choices that align with our deepest values – even when those choices are difficult.
When an individual chooses to face their fear, they are taking a psychologically flexible stance of acceptance, openness, and willingness.
Therapy requires a lot of courage, and it’s not always easy. But it can be an incredibly powerful tool for helping people to live fuller, richer lives.
I see my role as a collaborator and work with my clients to find the best approach suited for them. Flexibility and creativity play an important part of my therapy process.
If you think exposure therapy might be right for you, give me a call or book a free consultation today. I’d be happy to talk with you about your specific situation and help you decide if this is the right treatment for you.
